Making Free Money Online

The new co-presidents of Walt Disney Co.'s digital media group used the platform of the company's investor conference in Anaheim on Thursday to say what Wall Street has been longing to hear: that the money-losing division will achieve profitability in 2013.

John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive Media Group, said the division made significant layoffs in January and plans an additional 25% cut in operational overhead "in our march to profitability." No details on timing were offered.

"In the last 90 days, we've focused on getting the right team and scaling the team to where the business is today," Pleasants said, adding that the earlier wave of job reductions had already "taken millions of overhead out of the Interactive media group."

Pleasants and Co-President Jimmy Pitaro talked about refocusing the business to take advantage of new opportunities online and on mobile devices -- a theme Disney Chief Executive Robert A. Iger has underscored in earnings calls with investors.

The interactive group will begin shifting resources away from developing games for the mature console market, reducing spending by 50% over the next four years, Pleasants said. "That does not mean we won't be making boxed product," he hastened to add, noting the popularity of the Epic Mickey title released late last year.

Pleasants, who oversees games and social media within the division, talked about better capitalizing on opportunities -- not only on emerging technological platforms, but in burgeoning international markets. He said the division will narrow its focus to "four to six major franchises," creating content to take advantage of growth areas, while experimenting with business models -- from free to subscription to micro-transactions, in which players pay modest sums to enhance their online experience.

The group aspires to create its own world-class character franchises that can flow to other parts of the entertainment giant's businesses, much as Pixar Animation's "Toy Story" characters or Marvel Entertainment's superheroes fuel merchandise sales.

One such home-grown franchise Pleasants highlighted is Club Penguin, an online world for children that has grown by 400% in the last three years.

Pitaro, who has oversight of the Disney.com portal and a collection of websites for mothers and families,talked about creating a more personal experience that's shaped by a user's interests.

"When we deliver the right content to the right user at the right time," Pitaro said, "we'll grow reach and engagement and have a more powerful platform to surface the fantastic content we have across our company,"

Google has gotten a lot of attention for the launch of One Pass, the all-in-one subscription plan for publishers that the search giant revealed earlier today — primarily because it made for a nice counterpoint to Apple’s new in-app subscription system, which launched on Tuesday. While Apple’s offering is closed and takes a big chunk of the revenue from publishers, Google’s takes a much smaller cut — and because it’s based on the web and not on controlling access to a walled garden, Google’s system is much more open. That said, however, it’s not at all clear that publishers will get anywhere by signing up for it, open or not.

The main benefits of Google’s plan are fairly obvious: It doesn’t force publishers to provide the company with preferential access to their customers, the way Apple does by requiring in-app purchasing for all subscription services, and Google is taking only 10 percent of the revenue any publishers bring in via its payment system, while Apple takes 30 percent of all subscription fees. On top of that, as MG Siegler notes, the One Pass system provides publishers with access to information about those who sign up — names, email addresses, zip codes and so on — which is crucial data that content companies use to market their services to advertisers. Apple turns this option off by default, and users have to opt in.

That’s the good news. The bad news? Google’s One Pass is pretty much just a warmed-over content paywall. All it does is collect the money for publishers who want to put up a toll-booth around their content. In fact, the thing it resembles the most — as Josh Benton of the Nieman Journalism Lab notes — is the Journalism Online Press+ system that entrepreneur Steven Brill and former Wall Street Journal executive Gordon Crovitz have been peddling to newspapers and magazines for the past year or more, without much success.

Like that system, Google’s service is essentially designed to handle the payment processing for multiple subscription sites, so users can theoretically sign up for dozens without worrying about being nickel-and-dimed by each one. There’s just one problem: There’s no sign that users have any interest in doing this — or at least, not in large enough numbers to make it work for anyone other than perhaps The Economist and the Wall Street Journal. Those who have put up new paywalls, including The Times of London, have seen the vast majority of their readers disappear into the wind.

One of the reasons users of Apple products like the iPhone and the iPad seem a lot more willing to pay for things like apps is because the experience is so much better and paying is so easy. Despite that, magazine and newspaper publishers have have had little success so far in getting people to pay for their apps. Why would it be any easier with Google’s One Pass? If anything, it’s likely to be even harder, because it’s based on the open web — and users are likely to notice that free content is all around them, while iPhone and iPad apps do a fairly good job of disguising that fact.

So congratulations to Google for making some hay with its launch, but any publisher who sees One Pass as some kind of golden ticket is dreaming in Technicolor.

These types of scams targeting job hunters and attempts to gain access to personal information such as bank account or social security numbers and sometimes even ask for a fee in order to be registered for the job. This is one of the most common type of scams today with more and more people loosing jobs and it is getting difficult to get new jobs.

Debt Relief and Settlement Services

These services often charge fees and leave the consumer in even more debt. It is estimated by the Better Business Bureaus that these type of services increased by approximately 30 percent in 2010.

Work from Home Schemes

How low is a Facebook scammer prepared to go? Here's a pretty sick rogue application that we've seen affecting some users of the world's most popular social network, leading to the all too familiar money-making survey scam at the end.

Hmm. It would be nice to think that no-one would be interested in clicking on a link like that. But human nature being what it is, some folks (guys in particular I would guess) might be tempted to find out more and find they aren't able to show some restraint.

So, what does happen if you click on the link?

First thing you'll see is this splash screen (I've used some pixelation to protect the innocent):

If you are still tempted to click further, you'll be asked by a rogue Facebook application to grant permission for it to be able to post to your wall.

By the way, it's not just your personal Facebook page that the app will be able to post updates to - it will also be able to publish to any pages you might be responsible for, which could prove highly damage if you administer a Facebook page for your firm.

So, after all this, do you get to see the video?

Nope. Instead, you'll be greeted by a survey. And this survey makes money for the scammers behind the scheme as they earn commission for every survey completed.

Worse still, your Facebook account has already been abused by the rogue application which has posted a message about the dad catching his daughter stripping on a webcam for all of your Facebook friends to see.

In this way the scam spreads virally, attempting to earn as much money as possible for the survey scammers.

I know there will be people out there who feel that anyone who clicks on links like this deserve everything they get, but that doesn't mean the rest of us should be bombarded by spammy messages on Facebook just because some of our online friends have turned out to be a littel bit seedy.

We've seen cybercriminals use grubby themes like this to spread their attacks, and no doubt we'll see them again. Human nature isn't going to change and people will carry on clicking on them unless they're educated about the threats. Of course, it wouldn't do any harm if Facebook could work a little harder at preventing scams like this occurring in the first place.

How bad is it? Try to guess who wrote the following:

[Senators] have to lead, because this president is too weak, too cautious, too beholden to politics over policy to lead. In this budget, in his refusal to do anything concrete to tackle the looming entitlement debt, in his failure to address the generational injustice, in his blithe indifference to the increasing danger of default, he has betrayed those of us who took him to be a serious president prepared to put the good of the country before his short term political interests. Like his State of the Union, this budget is good short term politics but such a massive pile of fiscal bullshit it makes it perfectly clear that Obama is kicking this vital issue down the road.

To all those under 30 who worked so hard to get this man elected, know this: he just screwed you over. He thinks you’re fools. Either the US will go into default because of Obama’s cowardice, or you will be paying far far more for far far less because this president has no courage when it counts. He let you down. On the critical issue of America’s fiscal crisis, he represents no hope and no change. Just the same old Washington politics he once promised to end.

That’s Andrew Sullivan, formerly Obama fan numero uno in the blogosphere, now coping for the second time in eight years with crushing disappointment from a president he ardently supported. Ed’s already written a bunch about the budget today so I won’t belabor it, but have a look at Andrew Stiles’s bullet-point list of the lowlights if you missed it. $26.3 trillion in new debt — repeat, new debt — alone over the next decade. Says Jake Tapper, summing things up in a single harrowing line, “At no point in the president’s 10-year projection would the U.S. government spend less than it’s taking in.”

I’m preaching to the choir but let’s make sure we all understand the magnitude of what we’re seeing here: On the seminal issue of his time, the long-term fiscal sustainability of the United States, this guy has completely abdicated. In fact, I’m tempted to say that this, not ObamaCare, will be the cornerstone of his legacy, but that’s really a false choice. They’re two sides of the same coin: He has a policy agenda but we don’t have the money to pay for it, and so one or the other must yield. Guess which one he thinks it should be. Remember too that O once famously said he’d rather be a good one-term president than a mediocre two-termer. Today’s budget exposes that canard for the total fraud that it is. He could have dealt with Social Security and Medicare here but seniors won’t stand for that, and, well, there’s an election coming up and we all know how high turnout is among seniors…

It is, as Yuval Levin says, “an appalling failure of leadership,” one which forces the GOP to lead on entitlements. Think they have the guts to do it? I don’t, and evidently neither does NRO’s Dan Foster. Read his post in full, please, because I keep seeing conservatives high-fiving over last week’s tea-party insurrection in the House over budget cuts and I can’t understand why. It’s a cosmetic win. It means next to nothing. But here’s the difference between Obama and the GOP: Even though there’s an election next year, congressional Republicans would, I think, be willing to tackle entitlements if Obama went all-in with them, simply because they’ve invested so much of their brand in fiscal responsibility to woo tea partiers that they couldn’t risk walking away. They need some bipartisan cover on it, though; they can’t make enemies of seniors all alone right before a presidential contest. The linchpin, then, is Obama. He could provide that bipartisan cover by making an impassioned push to deal with this issue now, together, and would probably impress a lot of independents in the process. But seniors’ reaction would be unpredictable and his base would despise him for trimming the “social safety net” instead of propping it up with more Monopoly money, so he’s walking away to get elected. Ever wondered what it’d be like to run your own game development house? Me neither, but don’t let that stop you getting involved with Game Dev Story (iTunes link), a little gem of a game from Japanese developers Kairosoft, currently on sale in the app store for $0.99.

The concept is straightforward – grow your development house from a tiny team of four staff churning out cheap and cheerful PC games to a revered coding powerhouse in swanky offices crafting masterpieces for the latest consoles.

At first you’ll probably be going over budget left right and centre, trying to figure out which game types work best and therefore shift more units, but once you get into the swing of it you can concentrate on hiring and training the best staff and purchasing licences to develop console games, resulting in better made and better selling games with higher profit margins.

It’s not just a question of hiring and firing, coming up with game ideas and watching your staff working their buns off though. When you make your first million seller it’s a satisfying moment but there’s no time to rest on your laurels. There are always new consoles appearing on the market, contract jobs to take on, new staff to hire and new game types to discover. If you leave too much of a gap between development cycles you start losing fans and therefore a few sales, but think carefully about what kind of games you make – my pirate simulation was a right turkey.

It’s all great fun, but it’s fair to say there are a few things here which need to be addressed by the time Game Dev Story 2 arrives in the app store. I know it’s a tall order on a phone but I couldn’t help thinking how nice it would be if I could play the games my team had made. Even a comedy cut sequence showing some aspects of the latest game would have been good. There are also some hugely expensive advertising options within this game that offer no feedback other than some numbers increasing on a stat page. If I’m sponsoring a racing team I’d like to see my company logo on the side of a formula one car at least!

Finally, the game is perhaps a bit on the easy side. I’m sure if developing a multi million selling game was this straightforward we’d all be at it. Well, maybe not, but it’s easy to make enough money that you don’t have to worry too much about how you spend it, and this negatively impacts the strategy element.

All things considered however, Game Dev Story is great fun. It’s a good natured game and from the cute graphics and retro sound to the amusing titles you can give your creations, it’s a rewarding experience which works perfectly whether in short bursts or longer play sessions. Did I mention that it’s currently only $0.99 on the app store?

It's taking banks so longer and longer to process home foreclosures. What does this mean for foreclosure clean up business owners? When the flood gates open, foreclosure cleaning and real estate services companies are going to be busier than ever.

Following is an explanation of how and why.

Home Foreclosures: How Long Does It Take a Bank to Foreclose?

The time period from when formal home foreclosure takes place varies by state. Some states have a grace period of 30 days; others can take as long as six months. But, these are in normal times. Right now, we're in anything but normal times.

It's taking banks in states with high home foreclosure rates (eg, Florida, Georgia, California, Nevada, etc.) as long as six or nine months to even get around to even dealing with a property and processing it as an official foreclosure.

Home Foreclosures: The "Sign" (or Not) of the Times

Usually, when a home is foreclosed on, soon after the residents depart, you'll see a realtor's "For Sale" sign in the yard. Or, a bank "Foreclosure for Sale" sign. Or at the very least some kind of lock box on the door to secure the property.

Nowadays, it's not uncommon for a property to sit empty -- with none of the above present -- for months on end.

This probably means that the bank/lender hasn't gotten around to officially foreclosing on the property because once they do, they assign it to a realtor to be fixed up and ready to be marketed again (eg, put up for sale or lease).

When you consider the latest home foreclosure statistics, this makes perfect sense. According to RealtyTrac, a leading site for home foreclosure information, U.S. foreclosure filings may hit a record 1.8 million by the first half of the year (2009).

Foreclosure Cleanup and Real Estate Cleaning Firms Poised to Capitalize

Once banks get their policies and procedures in place, foreclosure clean up and real estate services firms are poised to capitalize.

Right now, banks are just struggling to deal with the tsunami of paperwork required to process a foreclosure. This leaves little time for vetting companies to deal with what happens after this process is done, eg, getting a property ready to go back on the market again.

Want Foreclosure Clean Up Contracts? Get Official

Man-with-a-van-type operations won't cut it. Banks and other lenders will be looking for companies that have the proper licensing and insurance, at the very least. In essence, they will be looking to hand out foreclosure clean up contracts and other real-estate-related services to "official" companies.

Many communities have federal dollars that have come in/are coming in to specifically help neighborhoods recover from the home foreclosure crisis.

Those foreclosure clean up companies (and real estate services firms) who have their "ducks in a row," so to speak, will be the ones to capitalize.
